Mountain biking is the fastest growing sport in SA. Granted, that’s not really news, however you may not know that Fat Biking is the new kid on the block within this growing discipline and boy is it popular!
Practically bomb proof, this chunky bike is an all-terrain beauty and is bringing out the perpetual kid in cyclists all over. Bombing through the forest, through vineyards or across the beach on a Fat Bike is arguably the most fun you’ll ever have on two wheels (without Lycra).
Plettenberg Bay and its surrounding area have long been hailed as one of the top biking destinations on the continent. With the proposed Plett to Cape Town Cycle Route planning stages in full swing, Plett is firmly on the cycling map, both locally and internationally.
Cycles in the Forest, a business born out of passion for cycling in the beautiful areas of the Garden Route, is playing an active role in bringing the Fat Bike experience to the general area.
Says Alan of CITF, “We are truly spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a race or a route to ride: Karoo-to-Coast, Knysna MTB Festival, Plett MTB Festival, Cape Pioneer Trek, Dr Evil Classic, GR200, GR300, etc. However not every MTB’er is a ‘race snake’ and that’s where Cycles in the Forest comes in. We’ll customize your ride for you – one, two or three day excursions through our vast forest network; all rides tailor-made to suit YOUR skill and fitness level. With the addition of Fat Bikes to our fleet, the routes are now customized to include beach rides at low tide. The possibilities are endless.”
CITF is currently in negotiations with Dodo Lifeguard Services to introduce Fat Bikes to Plett Lifeguards. This addition will certainly expedite rescues, especially on Plett’s vast beach stretches – a win for all.
