cemair-sponsors-lifeguards-kitCemAir, a leading personalised airline service and proponent of Lifesaving Programmes in South Africa, is giving back to the community of Plett with a donation of R75 000 to the Mayoral Development Lifesaving Programme. The donation will be used for new uniforms, the branding and repair of lifeguard towers and for further development training.

“We are very fortunate to have outstanding individuals within our local municipality and community who make things happen. Our Honorable Mayor, Memory Booysen; John Prins and Mark Fourie from the Bitou Municipality and Chas Fraser have all been instrumental in growing this programme. Plett Tourism appreciates all their efforts and hard work to make this a reality,” says Patty Butterworth from Plett Tourism.

The Bitou Municipality’s Mayoral Development Lifesaving Progamme has been operating successfully since 2008. The programme’s mission is to train and employ local youth from all communities in the area, to become qualified lifeguards to protect the beaches. Since its inception, they have successfully passed more than 130 youth through the Lifesaving South Africa Qualifications Programme. Many of the graduates have become full time professional lifeguards with others moving on to other professional fields including nursing, fire and rescue, SA Navy and paramedic services.

cemair-sponsors-lifeguards-kit“It is with great gratitude to receive the donation from CemAir for two consecutive years. The donation is primarily intended for the Lifeguard Training Programme, which includes the clothing, lifeguard towers, accessories and training. This donation gives our limited municipal budget a boost, a very important and professional programme in Plett which is a world-class tourist destination. We trust that our relationship with CemAir will continue and expand to allow us to grow the programme,” says the Bitou Municipal Manager of Housing, Beaches Parks and Amenities, Mark Fourie.

“With the help of CemAir we are continuing to move forward with our successes. Each year we have an average of 16 youth moving towards an LA accreditation. The programme has progressed to a cooperative level with the Plett Surf Lifesaving Club which enabling us to reach children as young as 8 years of age,” says Chas Fraser, Trainer and Manager of the Bitou Municipal Lifeguards.
