Flamingos released after being rehabilitated at Tenikwa, near Plett

On Friday 12 August Tenikwa Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and SANParks Wilderness coordinated a release of 2 Flamingos that have been rehabilitated at Tenikwa over the past 4 weeks following the tragic event of their flock flying into power lines in Wilderness.

The birds were admitted at Tenikwa Wildlife Rehabilitation centre near Plett on 18 July 2016 with multiple injuries and had to undergo several hours off surgery. They both made a remarkable recovery. The birds were rung by Dr Mark Brown from the Natures Valley Trust and received a clean bill of health from Dr Daryl Hunt for release.

The 2 birds were transported to Rondevlei Wilderness for the release. Jonathan Britton SANParks had his rangers scout the area to locate the flock .

The release was a huge success. The birds immediately got into the water, started preening and after several minutes moved off towards the flock.

Another successful collaborated effort between people in Conservation. Thank you to everyone involved.
