A Hedonist’s Tour of South Africa
My latest quest for bites, booze, and beaches took me to the South Africa. You’d need more than a week to properly explore the Western Cape but I managed to squeeze in four perfect spots: Cape Town, Franschhoek, Hermanus, and Plettenberg Bay — though I left each one wishing I had more time.
Plettenberg Bay
This enclave on the Western Cape is where beach-city people go for a beach-town vibe.
Where to eat
Just steps from the water, the Bungalow on Hobie Beach is the newest beachside B&B and café. Its fresh ceviche, grilled haloumi, and fried croquettes are the perfect companions to a crisp rosé. Cap off a beach day with a slice (or four) from Cornuti Stella e Luna—try the smoked salmon pizza or ask for the Judas Special.
What to do
Unlike its counterparts farther down the coast, the water temperature in Plett is just right. Take a dip in the sea and get your cardio in by walking the length of Robberg Beach.
Don’t miss
Plan a hike in the Tsitsikamma Mountains in the Garden Route; no iPhone photos can do it justice.
