Sand ART at Plett beaches a must see attraction for tourists

Plettenberg Bay (Plett) can brag about having some of the most beautiful beaches in South Africa, and for this, South Africa’s favourite outdoor playground has recently been awarded Blue Flag status for six of its beaches and has been nominated five years in a row for the award of Best Beach Destination in Africa. Nicknamed ‘Plett’, and located in the Garden Route in South Africa’s Western Cape Province – a coastal town which enjoys about 20 kilometres of a picturesque Indian Ocean coastline, with pristine sandy beaches.

Exploring the marine life through marine safaris, snorkelling and diving, it’s all fun and a thrilling experience. But you don’t have to get wet to savour a beach experience in this town – a new popular feature at one of Plett’s most popular beaches is entertaining sand art, which is attracting tourists with keen eyes by storm.

Expanding on the story that tourism is one of the biggest contributors to South Africa’s GDP- the sand art creation is the story of four locals who used to frequent the beach for relaxation, until they saw an opportunity, which now sustains their livelihoods.

For Sikhumbuzo Mthisan, Tallman Mlambisa, Philemon Makanyiso and Sandile Yapi, this is not only an expression of their creative ability, it’s their only means of earning a living, through the generous donations of visiting tourists. These artists use sand, water and shells to create beautifully crafted sculptures, from dolphins to sharks, to beach chairs, cars, and even the big five.

So if you’re passing by, be sure to stop here and enjoy this added beautiful scenery, but more importantly, be a good lad and spare some change. Don’t forget to share with us your #Plettitsafeeling experience, @Plett_Tourism.
