South Africa is well known for its Cape wine routes in Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Constantia, where tourists and locals can spend their days and nights taking in the natural beauty of the country’s wide range of scenic wine estates. But what many don’t know is that the Garden Route gem of Plett offers its very own selection of wine estates that people can check into for a well-deserved break.

Wine Estates in Plettenberg Bay

While it may be a new addition to South Africa’s list of renowned wine regions, Plett has claimed its place with award-winning Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Méthode Cap Classique wines. So, if you’re looking to discover the country’s latest wine route, here are some of the top wine estates with guest accommodation in Plett, written in collaboration with Private Property.

Bramon Wine Estate

Named after the owners’ children, Bram and Manon, Bramon Wine Estate was the first estate established in Plett in the year 2000. The family-run farm is situated 20km east of the centre of Plett, in an area known as The Crags, and has spectacular views of the Elephant Sanctuary and the Tsitsikamma Mountains. Their wines include Sauvignon Blanc, Methode Cap Classique, Pinot Noir and Rosé.

The farm offers wine tasting, a restaurant, function venues, the option of buying their wines online, and self-catering accommodation known as Waterfall Cottage. The cottage is situated on the edge of Buffels Gorge, and offers aerial views of the vineyards and the nearby waterfall.

Kay & Monty Vineyards

Located in the heart of the Garden Route, Kay & Monty Vineyards is a 220 hectare farm that includes not only vineyards, but a polo farm and guesthouse too. Offering views of the mountains in and around the Keurboom’s River Nature Reserve, the 5 hectare vineyard produces Sauvignon Blanc, Methode Cap Classique and a Red Blend.

The farmhouse, now converted into the luxury Rare Earth Country House, can accommodate up to 10 people, offering the ultimate private getaway for a family or group of friends. With accommodation on the estate, holidaymakers are given a choice of activities from watching a polo match and hiking, to wine tasting and biking around the area.

Luka Wine Farm

A boutique wine farm close to both Plett and Knysna, Luka Wine Estate offers guests close-up views of the Knysna Elephant Park. The vineyard produces Sauvignon Blanc varieties, which won numerous awards between 2011 and 2013, and is home to springbok and an array of birdlife. They will be introducing their new Methode Cap Classique and Red Blend spring of 2017.

The estate offers accommodation in the form of a self-catering house, located near the dam and surrounded by the vineyards. The house offers four bedrooms and an entertainment/braai area, and is conveniently located close to hiking and cycling trails.

Packwood Wine and Country Estate

Packwood Wine and Country Estate sits between the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountains and offers not only wine but also dairy products from the farm itself. With it being close to mountains, forests and ocean, guests can enjoy an abundance of nature while sampling the white varieties of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay as well as a Methode Cap Classique, Pinot Noir and Rosé.

Numerous accommodation options are available on the farm, in the form of cottages or houses. Up to six people can stay at a time, and they can enjoy a number of activities in and around the estate, from wine and cheese tasting, and walking or biking trails, to visits to the towns of Plett and Knysna.

While these wine farms are in one of South Africa’s newest wine of origin regions, they offer not only beautiful views and a scenic escape from the city, but also award-winning wines.
