LILIZELA AWARDS: ACTION, ADVENTURE AND SCENIC BEAUTY

Plettenberg Bay’s adventure and nature offerings continue to impress visitors across the country. At the 2018 Lilizela Tourism awards recently, two local activities were selected as the national winners in their respective categories.

Africanyon received the Lilizela Award for best Action and Adventure in South Africa and it’s easy to see why! Africanyon offers tourists a thrilling natural encounter in the Crags - swimming, jumping, abseiling and ziplining their way through the gorgeous river canyon. It’s a slice of the Garden Route that combines two of our favourite things: adventure and nature.

In keeping with adventure and nature, Untouched Adventures, located at Storms River Mouth, received the Lilizela national award for Scenic Beauty. Untouched Adventures pioneered their “kayak and lilo” excursion into the Storms River Gorge and it has proved to be one of the area’s most popular excursions. Kayakers paddle into the ancient gorge, surrounded by steep cliffs and indigenous forest, then hop onto lilos to paddle even further into the gorge, swimming and rock-jumping along the way – it’s a thrilling and enthralling way to explore the Tsitsikamma National Park.

We would like to congratulate Africanyon and Untouched Adventures on their awards; thank you for showing our visitors such a good time!

OCEAN BASKET DROPS ANCHOR IN PLETT

Ocean Basket, one of South Africa’s most best-known and beloved seafood franchises has dropped anchor in Plett. The new store in Mellville’s Corner on Main Road opened this past week and, after years of planning and searching for the perfect venue, Plett franchise owners Richard Verschoor and Nigel Proctor couldn’t be more excited.

Richard and Nigel met about 30 years ago, both working in an industry far removed from the hospitality industry and began their foray into restaurateuring eight years ago when they bought the Ocean Basket in Port Alfred. They attribute the success of the Port Alfred restaurant largely to their owner-run, hands-on approach to management and are committed to bringing this same ethos to their Plett store, so look out for Richard or Nigel in-store whenever you visit!

The new Plettenberg Bay store has been designed by the Ocean Basket Franchise design team and specialists and boasts a contemporary new in-store design which is modern and modular without losing the charm and simplicity that have driven the brand’s success over the years. The design focuses on enhancing both the guests’ experience as well optimising space and workflow in the ‘back-of-house’ area - the engine room of the store.

Ocean Basket offers a home-from-home feeling, friendly people and great value, and the menu comprises Mediterranean-inspired dishes including prawns, sushi, calamari and fish & chips. The Plett restaurant will seat 150 guests, with both inside and patio seating with a beautiful view of the bay.

Opening the Plett store has been in the pipe-line for a number of years now and to see the project coming to fruition is beyond exciting. We look forward to being of service to and getting to know this awesome local community,” says Richard.

WHAT A WAY TO START PLETT SUMMER!

The first weekend of the Plett Summer Festival is upon us and we have a super line-up to get you in the mood for memory-making, long lazy days and sultry nights!

The popular Plett Rage Student Festival kick starts our summer season, from 30 November to 7 December, as thousands of students flock to Plett to enjoy our gorgeous beaches and the festival’s world-class entertainment. However, there’s more to the first weekend in December than the Rage: if you’re looking to stock up on Christmas gifts or simply enjoy shopping, both the Plett Kasi Market at Voorhuise Plett (2 December) and Noel Centre Experience Day (1 December) will take place this coming weekend. The Plett Kasi Market promises to offer visitors and residents a unique Kasi experience complete with street vendors, a tshisa nyama and local artists. The Noel Centre Experience will showcase beauty, boutique and décor shopping alongside food and wellness.

Additionally, on 1 December, the Youth Empowerment Ambassadors NPO will be hosting the second annual finals of Mr and Miss Plett Knysna 2018 at The Old Rectory Hotel, with local artists performing and super prizes up for grabs. Ocean-lovers may want to head down to Wedge Beach on 1 December for the King of the Wedge surf competition, which will test surf skills in three categories: stand-up surfing, bodyboarding and bodysurfing in both senior and junior divisions.

GQOM is a style of mosono music that emerged a decade into the 21st century from the city of Durban in KwaZulu Natal. The word gqom derives from an onomatopoeic combination of click consonants from the Zulu & the Xhosa language that represents a hitting drum.

The 5km Summer Music Colour Run is back for its fifth year and runners will be entertained at three colour stations, two music stations (each hosting a local DJ) playing the best of the best summer tunes… You won’t need your iPod, because this event brings the beat! ROBBERG FINE FOODS CLASSIC BEACH REGATTA
15-17 December 2018

The sight of the multi-coloured hobies flying across the bay brings back happy childhood memories for many people and has, again, become an integral part of Plett’s summer season. For sailors, this legendary regatta is one for the Bucket List and sailors from all over South Africa take part in this fun regatta, amongst them Hobie national and world champions! Get up close and personal and watch as the boats do a beach start, race “round the cans” (a set of buoys in the bay) or do a long-haul race from the mouth of the Keurbooms lagoon all the way across to Robberg 5. While things may look calm from the beach, they’re anything but on the water as boats jockey for position on the start line and then race each other for line honours! Hobie sailors are famously easy-going and spectators are welcome to come down to Hobie Beach and “meet the fleet” when the boats are on the beach. Who knows, you may like it so much it may be you out their next time!

PLETT POLO INTERNATIONAL
29 December 2018

It’s time for polo action at our second international sporting event of the season and a much-anticipated Plett summer tournament! VIP ticket holders can look forward to following delights: accelerated traffic entrance, VIP-box runners to attend to guests’ needs, a cashless “Howler” system, British high tea, Newstead Bubbly and Oyster Bars and gin cocktails – on tap. The match afterparty promises to be memorable with entertainment from The Kiffness, Kevin Flloyd Project, DJ Dru, The Forgery and Oliver Leigh. It’s going to be just as marvellous as it sounds and R1000 deposit will secure your box.

The venue will host several events during December including a family-day concert and adults only New Year’s Eve with 5FM.

THE BARNYARD
December 2018 – January 2019

Plett’s Barnyard Theatre is well-known for being the first theatre of its kind in South Africa and is evening favourite with our visitors. Every summer, the Barnyard hosts musicians and performers at their rustic venue and this year the lineup will include Watershed, Bobby van Jaarsveld, Joshua na die Reen and much more. You’re encouraged to pack a picnic or preorder your meals, sit back and enjoy the holiday entertainment, you can even shuttle out and back home on the Barnyard Bus.
