A Cozy Stay by the River – My time at Bitou River Lodge

Driving into Bitou River Lodge, I was surrounded by lush grass fields and lemon trees swaying in the breeze. At the parking bay, Emanuelle – or more affectionately known as Manny – greeted me with a warm hug and a beaming smile, instantly recognizing me from a past visit. It felt less like checking in and more like coming home. I’m based in Mossel Bay and visit Plettenberg Bay monthly for business meetings, so that kind of welcome means a lot.

Manny led me to my room, taking the time to explain its features before giving me space to settle in. Shortly after, Kerry, the owner, came by to say hello. Her infectious smile and heartfelt hug reinforced the homely, welcoming atmosphere that Bitou River Lodge is known for. Kerry took me on a tour of the property, highlighting the latest renovations and sharing exciting plans for the future. A stunning new deck has been installed along the river, complete with lounge chairs for relaxation and a picnic bench for those who prefer to enjoy breakfast by the water. We then explored the revamped swimming pool area, now boasting an undercover deck, a hammock, lounge chairs, and a dedicated dining space for guests who wish to have their breakfast poolside.

The lodge also takes pride in its sustainable ethos, with over 100 lemon trees, whose fruit is sold at local markets, and a charming vegetable garden that supplies fresh produce for the lodge’s farm-to-table breakfasts. Every detail of the property speaks to a deep appreciation for nature and a commitment to offering guests an authentic countryside retreat. It’s clear they love this land and want guests to feel that too.

Tuesday morning began with blissful tranquility. I made my way to the main house, where breakfast was served. The moment I stepped inside, Manny greeted me with his signature smile. The breakfast area was warm and inviting, exuding a cozy cottage feel that perfectly complemented its idyllic surroundings. I took a seat by the window, overlooking the Bitou River, where clusters of violet lilies floated gently on the water, creating a fairytale-like scene against the green backdrop of trees and grass.

When Manny asked for my breakfast order, I left it in his capable hands, opting for a surprise. While I waited, I enjoyed a glass of orange juice. Soon, he returned with a beautifully presented bowl of homemade granola, topped with bananas, strawberries, plain yogurt, and a drizzle of honey collected from their own beehives. This was followed by a plate featuring two rashers of crispy bacon, a slice of wholewheat toast topped with smashed avocado, cherry tomatoes, and two perfectly poached eggs, adorned with edible flowers from the garden. It was a picture-perfect meal that set the tone for a great day ahead.

The rest of my day was filled with meetings, but by early afternoon, I found myself back at Bitou River Lodge, wandering through its serene grounds. The lodge offers five individually styled rooms, each with its own private entrance, en-suite bathroom, and a patio that opens up to the garden, leading down to the river. This personalized touch ensures that every guest experiences their own unique connection with the space.

Wednesday morning arrived with a gloomy sky, heavy with the promise of rain. Despite the weather, Manny’s cheerful greeting in the breakfast area lifted my spirits. With an early meeting on the agenda, I opted for a simpler breakfast this time, selecting an omelet instead of the usual surprise. As expected, it arrived beautifully plated, decorated with vibrant edible flowers in shades of purple and orange – adding a much-needed splash of brightness to the otherwise overcast morning.

I spent my final breakfast at the same window-side table, gazing out at the lily-covered river. Dragonflies hovered over the water, and birds chirped in the distance, creating a scene reminiscent of a classic Disney movie. As I sipped my juice, the soft patter of rain began to fall, rippling across the river’s surface and adding a rhythmic melody to the already serene atmosphere. It was the perfect way to soak in the last few moments of my stay

After breakfast, I said my goodbyes to my wonderful hosts, Kerry and Manny. As a parting gift, Manny handed me a bag of lemons from their own trees – a small but meaningful gesture that encapsulated the warmth and generosity of Bitou River Lodge.

My sincerest thanks go to Kerry and the entire Bitou River Lodge family for making my stay in Plettenberg Bay such a heartwarming experience. I can’t recommend this place enough for anyone craving a nature-filled retreat – solo travelers or families alike. If you love tranquility, warm hospitality, and a real home-away-from-home, this four-star gem in Plettenberg Bay is calling your name.
