We have five luxury en suite rooms, each with its own entrance, kitchenette & a patio overlooking the river. Each room has underfloor heating & overhead fans; TV with MNet; and WiFi. There’s a portable braai for sundowner barbecues; and canoes to explore the Bitou River. Full farmhouse breakfasts are served in the breakfast room. The guest lounge has a fireplace, a library of books and puzzles & boardgames for those chilly days.

One can enjoy the quirky shops & restaurants in town; one can join a dolphin and whale-watching boat tour; one can go kloofing and abseiling; there are birds, monkeys, elephants, even snakes to get up close to; there’s wine-tasting and bungee-jumping, hiking trails and beaches for swimming – but at the end of the day it’s wonderful to come back to one’s spot next to the river, to watch the sun go down with a good red in one’s hand. Our spot. Bitou River Lodge, Plettenberg Bay.

Bitou River Lodge. A ten-year plan that’s been going for 20 years now… We bought a cows’ field next to a river overgrown with aliens, replanted indigenous, built a farmhouse-style guest house and launched a whole new lifestyle. Paul, the architect, designed an eco-friendly water system, planted a lemon orchard and built stables, a pony pen, a barn and two tree houses. Sue, the teacher, polished up her French & German, practised breakfast recipes, discussed colour swatches, welcomed guests and taught them how to use the Lodge canoes for bird- and otter-spotting. Such fun. We’re a ten-minute drive from the bustle of Plett but it’s a whole other world out here: peace and green, trees and water-lilies.
