 Bitou Valley Bush Camp

The Adventure

At this family getaway all you are required to do is relax and immerse yourself in the natural environment. This experience is enhanced by your accommodation which is sheltered under a canopy of indigenous forest next to the Bitou River.

Our luxury tents come with comfy beds and fresh white linen, our food is sourced locally and prepared in our bush kitchen, served alongside the meandering Bitou River. If sleeping to the sound of a gently flowing river and waking to the cry of Fish Eagles is for you – then look no further.

Located just outside Plettenberg Bay, the Bitou Valley Bush Camp is nestled in the heart of the Bitou Valley in the Cape Floristic Kingdom which is the smallest, yet most diverse of the world’s six floral kingdoms, a World Heritage Site and a biodiversity hotspot. Falling within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Plettenberg Bay area is home to no less than five Blue Flag beaches and is in very close proximity to several Marine Protected Areas and breathtakingly beautiful forests – a living monument to our natural history.

The woody vegetation on the banks of the river surrounding the camp provides a unique habitat for birdlife that includes Fish Eagles, Kingfishers, Blue Cranes, Greater and Lesser Flamingoes, Plovers, Herons and marine birds to mention a few. This is a place where paddling in the river is for everyone, not just the ducks, and our guided bird excursions on foot and in our canoes are an unforgettable experience.

We also offer mountain biking (with our bikes) and guided hiking along the many and varied trails in Plettenberg Bay along the coastline and through the forests and fynbos. If chilling and recharging means working on your tan or working up a sweat with activities as diverse as the multitude of plant species and bird life – then this one-of-a-kind off the grid, low to zero to positive footprint camp, will be just up your street.

The Team

Your Guide is an experienced nature conservationist and adventure guide. He will always be with you and will impart a wealth of biological, marine, cultural and historical knowledge.

Two meals a day will be prepared by our experienced bush chef in his mobile kitchen, with fresh salads, potjiekos, braais and many other surprises appearing on the menu. The good old “koffie pot” will be on the fire while you are in camp.

The Biomimicry Camp

Engineered by a team of Biomimicry environmental specialists, the Bitou Valley Bush camp is 100% mobile, designed to leave no footprint on this environmentally sensitive area when we pack it up and go. Quite literally – the only thing we leave behind is our own footprints.

Our beds come complete with soft mattresses and 100% cotton bedlinen. Our tents have been specially designed to suit the local environment – their organic shape created to blend into and reflect the forest canopy while perching on mobile decks, thus preventing damage to the vegetation on the floor of the surrounding bush.

The tents are situated to ensure that there is no vegetation damage and individual camp sites are located next to the river, on the fringe of the canopy and under the Milkwood Trees. Each location has been carefully selected to ensure privacy and maximize on the spectacular beauty of the area.

We incorporate bush bucket showers using water brought into the camp that is heated then used in the showers and thereafter harvested and filtered through charcoal filters which, as it evaporates, provides the cooling system that runs the camp. This water is removed off site each day to ensure everyday contaminants like sunblock and deodorant do not go back into the river causing pollution and degradation to the delicate ecosystem.

The toilets have been developed using biomimicry principles that ensure that there is no waste of water; that all waste produced is turned into a resource, and that mainly locally available and abundant resources are utilized. The organic matter is broken down into compost using sawdust as the base component in a dry flushing and odorless toilet. The waste is later removed and used in a local nursery site as compost for saplings that will later become part of a Greater Knysna Forest regeneration project.

Food for your meals is prepared by our Bush Chef using locally grown vegetables and meals will be enjoyed around a camp fire with lighting accessed via solar lamps, wind turbines and even gravity!

Falling asleep with the sound of snuffling bushbuck and croaking frogs, waking to the call of nearby nesting Fish Eagles and knowing you’ve not only visited lightly but have contributed positively to the surrounding landscape, the Bitou Valley Bush Camp offers a truly special and unique experience, one that will live on in your memory.
