Eden to Addo Corridor Initiative – Annual Great Corridor Hike

Eden to Addo Great Corridor Hike

Eden to Addo Corridor Initiative has a vision to link three mega-reserves in South Africa by means of natural corridors that will protect & restore the integrity of bio-diversity in the area.

This corridor is unique since it encompasses seven of South Africa’s ten biomes. The mega-reserves formally protect a large percentage of the area. However, between the parks are strips of land owned by civil society. These strips of land or corridors connect the parks and mitigate fragmentation of the landscape.

Every year, Eden to Addo hosts the Great Corridor Hike! A 20 day, 350 kilometre, fund raising expedition for and about conservation. All money raised contributes to building essential conservation corridors stretching from Knysna to Addo, linking the three mega reserves of the area: The Garden Route National Park, the Baviaanskloof World Heritage Site and Addo Elephant National Park.

A call to action and rally for support in 2020:

Due to COVID 19 we had to cancel our 2020 hike. Thus we are short of R200 000.00 to reach our goal of protecting a further 10 000 hectares this year. The Eden to Addo Corridor is 100 000 hectares and to date we have protected 50 000 hectares.

If you support the work that we do, please consider donating so we can keep progressing towards our vision.

More about the Hike and how to join for 2021:

On the hike you walk through the corridors and through portions of all the reserves. The corridors are on private areas where only Eden to Addo is allowed access. The Eden to Addo Corridor is certainly the most bio-diverse corridor on the planet with fynbos, forest, thicket, succulent karoo and nama karoo biomes. Just one of the biomes, fynbos, consists of 9000 species of which 6192 are found nowhere else.

Nowhere else on earth will you be able to experience such diversity of terrain and species on a hike. You will be part of a small, exclusive group of hikers that makes its way to Addo. There is no organised trail to follow. You will not come across other hikers or chalets. You will walk through areas where the last truly free elephants, black rhino and buffalo still roam without fences to hamper their movement.

The Eden to Addo hikes are ‘Slackpack’ hikes walked in ‘Safari Style’, where your main pack is transported for you, so all you carry is a small day-pack with your lunch and wet-weather gear. On reaching camp at the end of the day you will find your safari tent already set-up, a fire on the go and a beverage of your choice. Meals are hearty and nutritious made by our amazing bush chef with mostly locally sourced products and ethically sourced free range chicken, eggs and lamb. All you need to do is put one foot in front of the other and take in the beauty and vast open spaces that surround you.

On registration we will send you a link to a comprehensive booklet on what to bring and how to get fit.
