Ocean Safaris

Africa’s Ocean Safaris is a proud owner of one of a few whale watching permits allocated country-wide and is also licensed by the South African Boat-Based Whale Watching Association to conduct marine mammal encounters in Plettenberg Bay.  We are dedicated to the observation and conservation of our magnificent marine environment and is rated by “Europe” magazine as one of the top 25 marine eco-ventures worldwide.

Taking a cruise with us will assure you of an exclusive, legal and environmentally sensitive encounter with our marine co-habitants. We also enjoy a special working relationship with the highly regarded and locally based Centre for Dolphin Studies, adding further to our commitment to the sustainable preservation of our marine heritage in Plettenberg Bay.

Sightings all year round include Common, Humpback and Bottlenose dolphins; Brydes whales; various sharks; Cape fur seals and pelagic birds among other surprises.  During our whale season (July to December), we conduct awe inspiring close encounter experiences with Southern Right whales and Humpback whales, this experience is nothing short of spectacular.

Africa’s Ocean Safaris prides itself on having the right vessels for the job at hand.  Our larger vessel, “Fatboy” (local nickname for a Southern Right Whale), is a custom built 35 foot twin-hull boat, powered by two 200hp outboard motors.  She has a comfortable 30 passenger seating configuration with sufficient space on deck for all passengers to view the animals we encounter.  The vessel is manned by a qualified passenger-vessel skipper and experienced guide.  Safety features include two life rafts VHF Radio and GPS navigation

Our smaller boat “Dolphin” a 25 foot catamaran, powered by two 100hp outboards is used for smaller groups.  Passengers are seated 3 abreast in four rows with ample room on the deck for all to get a view of the animals.  A qualified skipper is your guide on these trips.  Standard safety features include VHF Radio and GPS navigation.

All passengers are required to wear the lifejackets supplied for the duration of the trip.

There is adequate space on our vessels for each passenger to bring a bag and/or camera bag.  Please bear in mind that any equipment taken aboard is at your own risk.
