An evening for women to empower each other
The Women’s Networking Foundation is inviting all woman to be part of its “Visionary Women” series in an effort to motivate and empower each other.
According to one of its organisers Ziyanda Hlela, “It’s about empowering women, collaborating with other stakeholders and addressing key community challenges faced by women”.
While the program is not issue specific, it is nonetheless a plausible cause given that we are in a country where the extent of gender-based violence and inequality has rendered these issues a national crisis.
The statistics on gender-based violence in SA will numb you. Three women die at the hands of their intimate partners daily in South Africa. Levels of femicide here are five times higher than the global average.
There is also the pressing issue of inequality which directly affects empowerment of women and limits their participation in the economy.
Recent studies by the Gender Commission all indicate that more men are in higher paying jobs and managerial or decision making positions than women.
This is, of course, as the result of the deeply entrenched patriarchal system in South Africa, which the platform provided by the Women’s Networking Foundation seeks to tackle.
