Another amazing Amorim win for Newstead
Plett Tourism would like to congratulate Newstead Lund Family Vineyards for outstanding recognition in the prestigious Amorim Cap Classique Challenge. Newstead’s 2017 Blanc de Blanc was announced as the Best Producer and Overall Winner at the 2024 awards. This is the second time Newstead has been awarded Best Producer which they won initially in 2020 on their first year of entering the challenge.
Their 2017 Brut also won in the Extended Aging Class – a hat trick, with wins in the category in 2022, 2023 and now 2024!
In a statement, Newstead said: “We’ve been blown away by this. More than 130 bubblies were entered this year, and to be in the company of illustrious industry names is incredible. We’re still a relatively new estate, and we’ve been producing Cap Classique for less than a decade.
It’s wonderful validation for our decisions to do things in what some might call the hard, slow way. Like paying attention to detail in the vineyards, nurturing every vine and using netting to protect them. The care and dedication that our brilliant winemaker, Anton Smal, puts into every little thing. And then resisting the temptation to rush things, having the patience to leave the wine on lees for longer – which has paid off every time.
Thanks to everyone who’s supported us and enjoyed our wines. We’ve had a quiet glass of bubbly to celebrate, and to acknowledge our gratitude to people who’ve been part of our journey. Cheers!”
ABOUT NEWSTEAD LUND FAMILY VINEYARDS
Newstead has been described as the best-kept secret inside the South African wine industry’s best kept secret. Visit them in the Plettenberg Bay Winelands to taste, buy, explore or linger. While the fanfare around the country’s wines is almost always focused on the Cape, Newstead has believed from the start that the young Plettenberg Bay Winelands had something special. Time, hard work and accolades have proven this to be true.
Doug and Sue Lund brought their own young family to The Crags and in 2006 when the Plettenberg Bay Wine of Origin region was in its infancy. Buying 11.5 hectares of fallow land, they planted Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. They built their home and they built their cellar. From the vine to the wine, there’s potential, growth, change, and ultimately, hopefully, something very special.
And even then, there’s a sense of mystery and possibility, depending on when and how you enjoy it, and who with.
