Athina’s Cove’s self-catering villa gets a solar power upgrade
With the seemingly never-ending energy crisis that we face in South Africa, Athina’s Cove – a luxury self-catering villa located in the Whale Rock Ridge estate – has taken the step to upgrade our backup system to alleviate the problem for our guests and ensure both greener future and a comfortable stay.
On the 1st February 2024, we added 12 new solar panels to our roof giving us a total of 24 panels. The inverter system was upgraded from 5KVA to 10KVA to facilitate this and we have had an extra battery installed to store power. All excess power we generate is sent back into the grid to be resold.
We managed to generate a total of 1144 kWh in the first month of use. This halved our reliance on Eskom for imported electricity off the grid. Guests can now relax at Athina’s Cove knowing they won’t have their holiday stay interrupted by loadshedding.
ABOUT ATHINA’S COVE
Athina’s Cove is nestled in the beautiful security estate of Whale Rock Ridge in Plettenberg Bay. It has quick access to the Robberg Reserve which is ideal for hiking and The Wreck Beach for a swim which is only 2km away.
The house sleeps six adults in three sea-facing rooms and also has a six-man bunk room for kids with their own entertainment area.
Our backup energy system was recently upgraded to include 24 solar panels, a 10KVA inverter and matching batteries so we no longer have to worry about load shedding for our guests.
