Chasing pack grows as defending champ McNulty goes error free
After a very rainy opening day, golfers at the 2018 SA Senior Open hosted by Bitou Municipality were treated to near perfect conditions on day 2. Mark McNulty once again leads the pack with an error free 69 to lead on 6-under for the title.
Tuesday’s first round ended in a bizarre moment as Vaughn Fallick and Ranjith Singh were disqualified after heading back out while play was suspended by the head rules referee, Neil Homann, due to bad weather. The pair went back out to the 17th to complete their round before play was resumed, and so breached rule 6-8b. Unfortunately Fallick, who had hit a hole-in-one earlier on the 8th, and was on +3 for the round, is now out of the tournament alongside Singh.
In better news, Wednesday’s conditions were in complete contrast to the day before, providing the pros clear skies as a number of them shot under par as they seek to put pressure on McNulty going into the final two, pro only days. Kevin Stone shot an impressive 5-under, 67, to move into second place on 1-under for the tournament.
Playing alongside McNulty, Chris Davison was 1-under for the day and playing great golf, with a narrow miss for his birdie on 18 the only thing preventing him from going into the clubhouse on Even Par.
Callie Swart also had a successful day on the course with a 2-under 70, but he will need to go low on both remaining days to challenge as he is trying to pull back the 7 shots he left on the course on Tuesday. Luarison Mahlangu is another who made the most of the conditions, matching McNulty’s 3-under with a 69 to sit 4-over with some form heading into the final two days of competition.
Hosted by Bitou Municipality, the SA Senior Open continues on Thursday before Friday’s final round, when the remaining 56 Senior Professional’s tee off at 08:00 with a two tee start at the 1st and the 10th at Plettenberg Bay Country Club.
