Good news for the Garden Route – Commercial flights return to seaside Plett as SACAA approves upgrade of Plettenberg Bay Airport to Category 4

Cemair, the Bitou Municipality and Plett Tourism welcome the decision by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) to upgrade the Plettenberg Bay Airport to Category 4.

“I am glad to see that Cemair and the Bitou Municipality have resolved the issues outlined by SACAA which resulted in the downgrade of the airport from a Category 4 to a Category 2. Now that we have once again been reinstated with Category 4 status, we welcome the scheduled flights. This is great news for tourism in Plett and along the Garden Route. I would like to recognize and thank Cemair for their hard work and dedication, which was necessary to assist the Bitou Municipality to ensure the upgrade,” says Bitou Ward 2 Councillor Dave Swart.

This upgrade allows for the reinstatement of commercial flights immediately. Cemair flights are scheduled to commence on Friday 12 November 2021.

“Providing direct flights to Plett is crucial for the tourism industry. It is common knowledge that airports are catalysts for tourism growth and key to a town’s tourism relations, and at the end of the day, that equates to the upliftment of the communities who rely on the tourism industry,” says CEO Plett Tourism Patty Butterworth.
