Community-Created Mural at KuCoNa Create & Connect!
On 16 December, Kurland Village came together for a vibrant Community Painting Day at the KuCoNa Create & Connect Centre – an energetic, joy-filled gathering where people of all ages painted side by side and shaped a mural that reflects the heart, stories and identity of the community.
From early morning until sunset, families, children, youth, elders and visitors flowed in throughout the public holiday. People arrived in groups, as households, with friends or simply on their own—each picking up a brush and adding their voice to the wall. The atmosphere was warm, lively and deeply connected, with colour, laughter and conversation blending in a way that only true community spirit can create.
What makes this mural extra special is not only its vibrant, beautiful art, but the community stories it carries. The artwork holds the ideas, memories and hopes of the people who painted it, turning the wall into a visual storybook of Kurland. The mural is connected to the three different hubs of the Centre, reflected in the three different tones of colour. Each stroke reflects lived experience: the importance of nature, the role of care, the value of learning, the pride of belonging, and the joy of creating something together.

A highlight of the day was the presence of the Mayor of Plettenberg Bay, Councillor Jessica Kamkam, who spent several hours painting with clear enthusiasm and a warm love for the people of Kurland—sharing stories, connecting with residents and adding her creativity to the mural. Her presence brought an added sense of pride and excitement to the day.
The result is a living artwork shaped by those who call Kurland home, as well as by visitors who came to connect with the Centre. As people walk past the wall in the months and years ahead, they will see their own stories reflected back at them and be reminded that KuCoNa is a centre built from community spirit, imagination and collaboration.
