18. The Premier’s Advancement of Youth (PAY) Programme aims to create the opportunity for matriculants to gain workplace experience in the Western Cape Government (WCG). The internship allows for a year of mentoring, decision-making about a future career, on-the-job training and exposure to skills training and development to make the intern more employable.

Annually, applications open for Matric First Work Experience PAY Internship Opportunities. The programme provides matriculants between the ages of 17-24 with work experience and training within one of the 13 Western Cape Government Departments. Find out more here

19. Wesgro is the official tourism, trade and investment promotion agency for the Western Cape. Their role is to attract visitors, both international and domestic to visit the Western Cape. They undertake event partnerships to provide various levels of support to leisure events where opportunities exist to promote the Western Cape as an attractive destination. Tourist Guide Training | Covid-19 protocol training

The Western Cape government is providing Covid-19 protocol training for all registered tour guides:

Sessions will start at 09h00 and probably end by 14h00.

The link will be sent to guides who respond indicating the start time.

RSVP address is aliveptl@gmail.com with the subject line: REGISTRATION FOR COVID 19 READINESS PROGRAMME. A registration form will be sent to those who indicate interest. 

A short assessment will be done after each session. At the in-person sessions, a lapel pin will be handed to successful participants.

Electronic certificates will be sent to each successful participant within a week after the session.

Youth Skills Development Programmes 2021/22

Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) is embarking on a small, medium and micro-enterprise (SMME) programme to dynamic and committed entrepreneurs to grow their businesses. A broad scope of non-financial assistance will be provided, including compulsory business development interventions and training.

Skills Development Programmes are a critical element that contribute to the success of the tourism sector. An adequately skilled workforce ensures world-class service levels are maintained within the tourism value chain, and also assure an enhanced visitor experience. 

In the 2021/22 financial year, the Department will implement various training programmes to enhance and upskill the youth to make a meaningful contribution to the economy of the country.

FREE Four-Day Virtual Career Expo

Momentum Metropolitan will host a free, four-day Virtual Career Expo on 27 and 29 July, and 3 and 4 August, which is aimed at school-leavers from disadvantaged communities, but open to all young South Africans.

The expo aims to introduce youth to a broad spectrum of career options and opportunities while imparting valuable knowledge and practical skills that will assist them on their path to employment.

The four-day expo is grouped according to four key themes, with each theme covering a number of relevant topics, which are imparted by a Momentum Metropolitan employee and expert in that specific area.

Day one, titled a ‘Job Hunter’s Guide’, is aimed at equipping school leavers with the basics as they prepare to enter the working world, and topics include ‘How to compile a CV’, ‘How to give a successful job interview’, ‘Personal presentation’ and ‘Job-searching tools’.

The second day is dedicated to ‘Opportunities’, giving an overview of the Further Education and Development (FET) field, as well as skills training within the non-profit organisation (NPO) realm.

The third day of the programme is focussed on the digital world, with sessions on social media etiquette, coding and opportunities within the field, while day four covers ‘Business Management’ for aspiring entrepreneurs, with topics such as ‘Entrepreneurship 101’, ‘Financial management’ and ‘Skills development’.

“While the events of the past weeks have been disheartening, we urge our young people not to lose hope, says Nkosinathi Mahlangu, portfolio head for youth employment at Momentum Metropolitan.

“Through showing our youth the career opportunities available to them while imparting valuable knowledge and skills based on real-life experience, we hope to expand their horizons encourage and inspire them to reimagine their futures. Together we can.”
