Our next penguin release will be on Lookout Beach, Plettenberg Bay on 20 March 2021, at 9am.

The release is a collaboration between Tenikwa Wildlife Rehabilitation and Awareness Centre, Nature’s Valley Trust, BirdLife Plettenberg Bay and CapeNature, and is supported by BirdLife South Africa, and Plett Tourism. Members of the public are encouraged to come to experience the moment and can meet the team near the Lemongrass Parking area.

Date: 20 March 2021
Time: 08h30
Venue: Lookout Beach

Adult and juvenile African Penguins are often seen in the waters around Plettenberg Bay and are occasionally found on the beaches, injured or sick. These birds are currently Endangered and there are only 2% of their historical population left in the world. So every bird counts!

They only come on to land to breed (in their colonies) or when they are sick or injured. When a penguin gets stranded in and around Plett, they are taken to Tenikwa Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre for the care they need to become fit and healthy and, of course, to be released into the wild again.
