Helena is known in particular for her French interpretations of Piaf and Brel. She has performed this music among others with the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Gerard Korsten. She will also entrance the audience in Richard’s Bay with excerpts from her double French album, “Spirit of Piaf and other great French Legends” that has several of the much loved favourites of the “Little Sparrow”( as Piaf was dubbed in her time), as well as some of Jacques Brel, Charles Aznavour, the legendary singer and Gilbert Becaud.
The cover song “Rooiwynliefde” was set to music by the greatly loved late South African musician, Christa Steyn and the lyrics about everlasting love are by Marianne Venter.
This CD of original music has musical arrangements of some great classic Afrikaans poems such as – “In die Hoeveld” (Toon van den Heever with music by Philip Nel), Diep Rivier (Eugene Marais with music by Eugene Vermaak), Katrina (I.D. du Plessis with music by Lizanne Barnard of Marimba fame), as well as nine of Helena’s own songs such as the quirky “Quasi, quasi Blu” her first Italian/English song; the ever popular “Sonkring” the theme song of the TV series (for which she wrote the lyrics and sings), which is now “Cercle Solaire” – a first Afrikaans/ French version; and, “Die trein het jou kom haal”, a metaphor for death, for which Helena accompanies herself on the piano; and finally, the Karen Zoid/Bruno Andries catchy “Bonnie and Clyde”.
The performance is also interwoven with the songs of international greats such as Katie Melua, Leonard Cohen ,Janice Ian, Nina Simone as well as renowned locals such as Koos du Plessis and Anton Goosen whose “n Stadige Hand” dates back to Helena’s time as part of the “Kommissie van Ondersoek” during the early ‘nineties of which she was the youngest member.
