SUNERA Equestrian Estate, in the most picturesque Piesang Valley, is a newly developed Show Jumping and Events Venue. It is continuing in the tradition of its equestrian history, as it was previously Roodefontein Stud Farm. The Show Jumping venue is named after the very successful race horse SUNERA, who has won many races in the late 1980’s.
SUNERA has received the privilege, honour and responsibility of hosting the 2018 Adult Show jumping Championships of South Africa, to determine who will be our next SA champion! The Western Cape Adult Show jumping Championships will also be hosted on Sunday, 25th November 2018, where the riders in the 1.40m Championship class will ride for this sought after Provincial title.
The competition will run from Tuesday the 20th of November, with the highlight and determining class, Sunera 1.50m SA Championships, on Saturday the 24th of November. At the time of going to press 37 horse and rider combinations have entered in the 1.50m classes to ride it out for the top 24 spots in this main class. They will have to compete in both qualifiers. Wednesday the 21st of November, a speed class and Thursday 22 November. In this competition the clear rounds will go through to a jump off against the clock to determine the final placings and the top 24 qualifiers.
This coveted title is bringing big names in show jumping to the town of PLETTENBERG BAY! Kelly O’Connor and her feisty mare Hera Van De Bien will be here to defend their title, won in fine style in 2017, being the only double clear round in that competition. They seem well poised to be right up there at the top again in the final stages of the competition, as they will be arriving in Plettenberg Bay just being crowned winners of the SA Derby 2018!
Kelly will not have it all her own way as there are a few more on form combinations entered. Jonathan Clarke and Data Sciences Hummer Van Het Bevrijdthof have won the last three World Cup Qualifiers on the trot – a hat trick not to be snuffed at and Jonathan has options as he has another two rides in the 1.50m classes, Data Sciences Felix Van De Mispelaere, his longstanding partner in the big classes that has won many classes for Jono and the owners Slade Equestrian. He is also riding Data Sciences Enouche Rk.
The winners of the 2018 South African World Cup Qualifier series, Marlene Sinclair and Camaro will also grace our arena and it is only on the rare occasion that this unassuming lady does not stand on the podium.
It is a very strong class with each horse and rider being of exceptional talent and worth a mention. Each one entered is quite capable of winning the class. We have our very own Western Cape rider Tara Louw competing on Kuda’s Mr President and Kuda Insurance Foreigner. Tara and Kuda’s Mr President won the 1.40m class at the SA Derby in October.
Rider’s who shared the podium with Kelly at the Derby, Anne-Marie Esslinger and Liam Stevens both have two horses entered in the 1.50m classes. Govett Triggol is back in South Africa after campaigning in Europe, being placed and winning on a regular basis during his campaign. He brought Callaho’s Wolke 334 home with him earlier this year and you can see them in action in your hometown!
SUNERA is promising to be high up on the events calendar of Plettenberg Bay from now on.
A day to book out on your calendar will be 15th December 2018 when PRIME CIRCLE will be performing on the farm. The performance will start at 12h00 that day & will carry on for the best part of the day. It promises to be a fun filled day for the family day with loads of entertainment for young and old. During the course of 2019 more exciting bands will be performing at SUNERA.
IN 2019 SUNERA will be hosting the SUNERA NATIONAL SHOWJUMPING CUP on 19 July to 21 July 2019. We are also extremely privileged and excited to be hosting the last leg of the SA World Cup Qualifier 26 November 2019 to 1 December 2019. There will also be major shows at the end of April 2019 and middle of September 2019. Also smaller shows will be hosted approximately once a month throughout the year.
