Exploring the Wittedrift area outside Plettenberg Bay

As South Africans, we are blessed to live in a country with such a diverse selection of holiday destinations.  The ones that always seem to catch my attention are the lesser-known spots and the gems you stumble upon when venturing outside the familiar holiday spots.

Wittedrift Way

Wittedrift Way is one of these places. A tight-knit community with a history that extends over many generations.

A short drive from Plettenberg Bay you will find a turn inland towards Wittedrift.

Where you are welcomed with the most beautiful beaches in Plett, the area now transforms into landscapes filled with wetlands, fynbos, and forests with the Tsitsikamma mountains as your backdrop—offering a variety of unexpected activities to fill your days and tranquil accommodations.

Archery at Howberry Hills

Set on the hills surrounding the Bitou river, Howberry Hills is more than just your average luxury guest lodge.

If you are a fan of Robin Hood and The Hunger Games, then you’ll enjoy the unique 3D archery trail through the forest. No experience or equipment needed, all is provided.

In addition to this, they also offer horseback riding, fruit picking (seasonal), mountain biking, and hiking trails.

Giraffe View Safari Camp

Giraffe View Safari Camp is a free-roaming wildlife camp where you can watch Giraffe, Zebra, and a variety of buck straight from your accommodation. This safari camp also offers an elevated pool deck with spectacular panoramic views and guided game drives.

Giraffe View is also home to some of the most spectacular bird species you’ll encounter in your life including the Knysna Turaco, Spotted Eagle Owl, and Secretary Bird.

Boschriver farm outride

With something for all experience levels, the Boschriver farm horse trails is a must-do.  Their beautiful and friendly horses will take you on a gallop through open fields, and along the river promising spectacular views of the Tsitsikamma and fantastic bird spotting opportunities.

The rides can also be custom-made to include a picnic and for the younger kids (under 12) they also offer shorter pony rides.

Bitou Bird Hide

Where I could never understand the excitement behind birdwatching, I had the opportunity a few weeks ago to view thousands upon thousands of birds descend to a mini island along the Cape West Coast for their bedtime.  I was mesmerised by the view and sheer magnitude of this and also giggled a few times watching the cunning late comers ‘steal’ a good spot from another family. You snooze, you lose, clearly applies in nature too.

This experience has converted me into a birding enthusiast, and the Bitou Bird Hide is nothing but spectacular.  This open sanctuary is home to a large number of seasonal and local birds and breeding ground for a pair of well known Blue Cranes.

Go for a hike around the kloof or spend a relaxing afternoon next to the water pans. I know we all tend to venture towards the familiar and the popular, but you never know what new and fun experiences you may stumble upon. For car rental in South Africa, Drive South Africa has some great deals, so no excuses to get out there and explore a little.
