Global Design, Local Roots: Plett Local and War Journalist Open “Shpoggle Island”

PLETTENBERG BAY, 8 December 2025 – What happens when a Plett local and a British war journalist living in Istanbul decide to build their dream holiday home? You get Shpoggle Island Surf House – a genre-bending new short-term rental that blends high-adrenaline adventure with sensory relaxation.

Shpoggle Island is a 4-bedroom sanctuary located 400m from the beach. The home is a physical manifestation of the founders’ lives: rooted in the beauty of Plett, but influenced by the chaotic beauty of their current home in Istanbul.

A Home of Contrasts “Living in as busy as a city as Istanbul, and working in high-pressure environments, has shown us the value of a space that allows you to totally unwind”, explains founder, Jessie. Having led inclusivity work in European tech, Jessie is used to building neuroinclusive spaces, and has brought this into the house design. The house features a private climbing wall, boxing gym, and indoor pool for high-energy release, balanced against wabi-sabi quiet nooks, sensory-calming textures, and hammock nets for quiet stargazing next to the crackling fire pit.

The interiors reflect the founders’ journey, bringing authentic Turkish and Moroccan aesthetics to the Garden Route, making guests feel like they are somewhere totally different — while remaining right in the heart of Plett.

Key Highlights:

  • The Vibe: “Barefoot Adventure” meets “Istanbul Soul.”
  • Amenities: Climbing wall, boxing gym, indoor pool, fire pit.
  • The Design: Neuroinclusive design for sensory regulation.
