January news from the Plett Adventure team
2019 is off to an exciting start and we’ve been out and about on our local trails and rivers. Its been great to share the trails with all the holiday makers over the festive season and now with more international tourists.
After Drew’s accident and partial dislocation of his shoulder in the form of an acromioclavicular joint injury which saw him in a sling from mid November to end of December, he’s back in training. Slow rehab with the advice of Plett biokineticist JJ Greyling and the ongoing help of Plett Precision Pilates and Lyno guru Fran Bailey he is running and cycling again. “The highlight so far this year has been hiking in the mountains with my son Tayo at age 13yrs he handled the tough and spectacular Witels river which was a 5 day hike in the mountains including high peaks and swimming down rivers.” Great training for Vasbyt 100hr Adventure race which is the first expedition length Adventure race Drew will take part in later this year in May.
Andrew (Buddy) together with his wife Melanie competed in his 5th Attakwas mountain bike race. Attakwas is a 120km single day mountain bike race from Outshoorn through Bonnievale to Grootbrak river. The race is known for its technical terrain. Over the festive season Buddy and Mel managed 1300km in training rides in and around the Crags, Plett and surrounding areas.
Petrus (Pete) is packed and ready to leave this Friday the 15th of Feb for Lady Grey where together with Tim Fey they will team up for the Non Stop Wartrail Challenge. Race starts Sunday morning with a 65km mountain run (first half of the Skyrun route), from there transition at Balloch caves onto the bikes for a 150km mountain bike leg and lastly a 65km paddle on the Orange river. Race starts Sunday morning the 17th of Feb anytime between 12pm Sat night and 7am Sun morning. The river only opens for the paddle on Monday morning 6:30am after a dark zone so depending on your race strategy you determine your start time.
Some of our training routes building up to the event included:
Running – Natures Valley Rugpad route combined with Kalanderkloof, Saltriver and Grootriver loop where you can run up to 30km single track. Some road running around town with the inclusion of Robberg for technical terrain. Out of town training included coastal sections between Stilbaai and Jongensfontein as well as a training weekend in Stellenbosch exploring the Jonkershoek trails and mountains for some elevation. A training race included the new Van Stadens Mountain Marathon 21 or 42km. It was the first run of this event and on our doorstep. Prepare for lots of climbing and technical running, spectacular views, a must do if you missed out this year!
Cycling – Combination of tar and technical as the wartrail route combines district roads, jeep track and single track with lots of climbing. Training rides includes Harkerville Green and Red routes combined with tar for distance, Cairnbrogie coastal loop combined with airport road and for longer rides towards Tsitsikamma riding 4 passes including natures valley and some forestry sections. Some very early morning rides testing bike lights etc as the wartrail ride will be at night time.
Paddling – we have both the natures valley lagoon when the mouth is closed, good for a run/paddle/run training mission, other paddling mostly on the Keurbooms. Tim is part of the Century City Canoe Club and completed in his first PE 2 East London ocean paddle in December last year so his paddling is on form!
