Kay & Monty Champu Wins Double Gold in the Amorim Cap Classique Challenge 2024
Plett Tourism would like to congratulate Kay & Monty Vineyards on the recognition of their Champu 2017 with a Double Gold (a score in excess of 95/100) in The Amorim Cap Classique Challenge 2024.
This award is considered South Africa’s most respected accolade honouring local, naturally-fermented sparkling wines and showcasing the incredible diversity of regional terroir to be found here. While heart-warming for Kay & Monty, this achievement also casts a worthy spotlight on all the vintners and viticulturists of Plettenberg Bay – the country’s smallest “Wine of Origin” production area.
As a small, family-owned farm, it truly takes a team effort to craft the four boutique wines currently in Kay & Monty’s range. Lots of early mornings and long days go into every vintage; a huge amount of hard work and commitment that has borne fruit in not only the popularity of their easy-drinking wines with customers, but in renowned industry awards like this one. The tightly-woven team in the cellar is directed by legendary winemaker, Anton Smal, while the farm’s General Manager, Jennifer Woods, works tirelessly with their “farm family” to harvest, produce, bottle and market Champu and its sister wines.
The 2017 Champu is an unwooded Chardonnay blanc de blanc, made in the traditional French Méthode Cap Classique and spending 54 months on the lees (hence its inclusion in the category of “Extended Lees Ageing”) before being released in December 2022. Fresh and fruity on the nose with hints of golden delicious apples and pears, the flavour is ultra crisp, featuring persistent lime overlain with biscuit notes.
Like all of Kay & Monty’s wines, Champu is best enjoyed in the fresh country air alongside a long, sun-drenched lunch in the company of family and friends – a celebration of the most important things in life.
ABOUT KAY & MONTY
Once a rambling protea farm and dairy, Kay & Monty Vineyards is now a charming 220-hectare wine farm, polo estate and wedding venue. The land was purchased in 2004 by Chick Legh, who planted the first vines five years later – only the second property in the region to do so – producing its first vintage in 2012. Chick’s legacy is honoured by general manager, Jennifer Woods, and winemaker, Anton Smal, who work closely together to craft interesting, innovative wines that Chick would have loved.
The full range of Kay & Monty Vineyards wines can be tasted on site on our farm in The Crags, and ordered for courier delivery via our website www.kayandmonty.com.
