Letter of Appreciation from Konco’s Sports Tournament Organiser
The vibrant Konco Sports Tournament, organised by local entrepreneur and sports enthusiast Athenkosi Konco, is now in its third year, held at the Kwanokuthula Stadium.
On the 29th March 2025, the first session, hosting netball teams for the first time in a Konco Tournament, was held to great success. Then on 31st May 2025, soccer teams from Gqeberha, Knysna, George and Plettenberg Bay gathered in Plett for the soccer tournament.
Despite a day hampered by drizzling rain, spirits were high as teams competed in the hotly contested matches. The aim of the tournament, according to Konco, is to create drug and alcohol free environments within which young people can enjoy time together and build strong life skills through sport, challenges and friendly competition.
Athenkosi Konco said in a letter of thanks to Bitou Municipality and Plett Tourism: “We stand for youth development. Under youth development, I believe that young people should be well equipped, so as to be easily employable and create a drug and alcohol free environment by means of creating and organising sports tournaments for under’s level where the youth can actively and freely expose their talent among their peers. We would like to offer our most gratitude to the Bitou Municipality for partaking in the event and making an idea become a reality. We humbly give special thanks to the executive and its administration for giving us the opportunity to do such an event.”
Taking a well-deserved break after the tournament, Athi kept the Plett flag and his determined spirit, flying in Cape Town. He tackled Lion’s Head and had this to say, “So, I had an opportunity to experience Lion’s Head myself on a cold early morning. It was an amazing experience whereby you reach your strengths, face your fears and overcome challenges by making what seems impossible, possible, and at the end of the day, obtaining victory.”
