Mark McNulty wins Senior Open Championship in Plett
Plettenberg Bay Country Country Club was privileged to host some world class golf over the last 4 days, none more so than Mark McNulty’s performances. Not since Spieth at the at the 2015 Masters has a major golf event witnessed such a dominant performance, leading from wire to wire.
Leading by six from James Kingston going into the final day, McNulty had a less than ideal start, he dropped shots on 3 and 4 while Kingston birdied 2, 3 and 7 after a bogey on the 1st and suddenly they were making the turn just two shorts apart. The mark of a true champion is how they respond to pressure and McNulty proved he has BMT by the truckload with birdies on 10, 12 and 18 while Kingston went level par for the final 9. That meant McNulty secured the SA Senior Open Championship title by 5 shots, a deserved reward for some truly memorable golf.
Roger Wessels, who had started the day 8 shots behind the leader and 2 behind Kingston was level park going down the final stretch, but rolled in 3 birdies in the last 3 holes to close with 69 and finish 8-under for the tournament, one behind Kingston.
James Kingston finished with his second runner-up finish in two weeks and is looking like he is going to be a big threat on the Senior Tour, with Mark McNulty suggesting he takes his game to the Champions Tour as he has the ability to win there.
Mark McNulty has won the 2017 SA Senior Open Championship in Plett with 14 under par followed by James Kingston (9 under par), Roger Wessels (8 under), Michael Green (2 under) and Kevin Stone (+1).
