This is the strongest ever field assembled for a Senior Tour event in South Africa, but there was one player whose performance eclipsed all other competitors and that was Mark McNulty. “SuperMac” was the best player on the course on Tuesday, with his back-nine featuring 6 birdies and him eventually signing for 7 under par 65.

His quality of play and determination to keep his round bogey free was apparent for all to see on the 16th (he had amassed a bit of a following on the course) when his 2nd shot had found the bunker, only for him to play a sumptuous shot from the sand and into the hole.

McNulty holds a 4 shot lead over Michael Green and Kevin Stone, but it is those just a few shots further back that he will have his eye on. James Kingston, Denis Watson, John Bland and Roger Wessels are all in the chasing pack and will be using McNulty’s round as motivation going into day 2.

In the Pro-am Mokgeteng Mashego and John Moyes took the honours, beating McNulty and Barry Richards, the former cricketing great, into second after a count-out.  The prize giving was held at the Beacon Island Hotel, with two items auctioned raising funds for the Endangered Wildlife Trust.

Day 2 promises some exciting golf, with many players now more comfortable on the Plettenberg Bay Country Club course and we could see players take some more risks in a bid to chase down the leading pack.
