Defending champion Mark McNulty alongside 55 senior professional golfers got underway in wet conditions as the rain poured down on first day of the 2018 SA Senior Open hosted by Bitou Municipality.

The rain was interrupted by bursts of sunshine as the tournament kicked off with the official Pro-Am. Derek Ferreira held the early lead with two quick birdies from the first three holes, a bogey on the 13th however kept him at -1.

Gerhard Scheepers then stepped up to the same 13th hole and only needed one shot to drain the 174m par 3. That magnificent shot gave him momentum as he followed up with 3 pars before finishing his first 9 holes with two successive birdies. Not to be outdone and seemingly in a rush to get out of the miserable rain, Vaughn Fallick (pictured) reached the 8th and drilled home the second hole in one of the day from 180m.

The four day SA Senior Open is set to continue on Wednesday the 3rd of October at the Plettenberg Bay Country Club. Weather conditions are forecast to improve following the strong winds and torrential downpours on Tuesday with clear skies and light winds due for the final three days of competition.

Hosted by Bitou Municipality, the SA Senior Open concludes on Friday 5th October when all 56 Senior Professionals tee off at 08:00 with a two tee start at the 1st and the 10th.
