The Restaurant Association of South Africa (RASA) in conjunction with IHSS Group has created a document to provide restaurants across South Africa with guidelines during and after the Covid-19 Pandemic.

The document highlights mandatory and recommended actions and control measures to be implemented by employers and managers. As far as reasonably practicable these recommendations have been developed to be suitable for the Restaurant industry.

The world is facing an unprecedented global health, social and economic emergency due to the COVID- 19 pandemic.

Travel and tourism is among the most affected sectors. In an unprecedented shock to the tourism sector, the COVID-19 pandemic has cut international tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2020 to a fraction of what they were a year ago.

Available data points to a double-digit decrease of 22% in Q1 2020, with arrivals in March down by 57%. This translates into a loss of 67 million international arrivals and about USD 80 billion in export revenues from international tourism.

The unprecedented impact of COVID-19 on our communities, informal (spaza shops) and formal (small and medium) scale businesses has led to wide-scale relief responses from the private and public sector.

The Special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant will be implemented in terms of the existing avenue provided for by the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) channel, which is administered in accordance with the provisions as set in the Social Assistance Act, 2004. In terms of Regulation 9 (6), social relief may be provided to South African citizens, permanent residents and refugees who have been affected by a disaster.

In a highly anticipated address to the nation on Wednesday 13, President Ramaphosa missed an opportunity to provide direction on the state of the economy, which is in a state of disaster thanks to the nationwide lockdown.

Over the last decade or so we’ve heard the popular phrase “print media is dying” so often. Well, finally it’s proven to be true. Thanks to COVID-19, print media has finally been pushed off the shelves.

The nationwide lockdown meant people’s movement is restricted, except for essential services, but as people begin to work remotely and even consumers prioritizing essential needs on their shopping lists, the cancellations of advertisements prior to the lockdown was a sign enough that things were not going to be the same again.
