Plett Gqom Experience growing stronger each year

“Lit”, “success”, “fire” and “epic” are just some of the adjectives used to describe the 2019 Plett Gqom Experience, the response received when I asked peeps on my Facebook page to describe the event using just one word.

The second annual Plett Gqom Experience took place at the Kwano Sports Grounds on Sunday the 16th of December – AND it was a hit, again!

We were all worried about the rain but thank heavens the gods spared us that night. The weather was a bit chilly but still, thousands told themselves that come what may, they would not miss it for the world.

Event organizer Thembinkosi Henge, popularly known as Dede, has really outdone himself. The event is improving each year, and as Plett, we cannot be more impressed.

It received my first thumbs up when I walked through the gates. I was impressed with how well organized the whole setup was. Secondly, was the way the security detail and how well organized and efficient they were. This had a huge impact for me. I saw two or so sniffer dogs, lots of personnel on the ground including medics.

From the formal organisation and production side of things, we certainly felt much safer.

The popular headliner for the event was none other than Zodwa Wabantu who last year vowed to always come back to our beautiful bay for this particular event.

Perhaps it is thanks to her that the event has managed to draw the attention of party-goers from as far as Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Beaufort West (the event founder’s home turf), George, Knysna, Oudtshoorn, Mossel Bay and other areas.

In meeting with the expectations of her fans, Zodwa was her usual self – clothes off and a personality that literally seduced everyone in attendance, except me off course.

The line-up alone was a hit, it included multi-award winning DJ’s like DJ Tira and DJ Prince Kaybee.

Manning the stage were the Garden Route’s own flamboyant lads Bonisile Desha from George, and Sivuyile ‘Sivu’ Nkomo. They shared the stage as MC’s with the nationally acclaimed media personality and actor Selby Mkhize, otherwise known as ‘Selbeyonce’.

The local hip hop duo Main Fact drew huge accolades from the crowds; this was certainly big for them as they were the only hip hop group in a predominantly house music festival.

Certainly the Plett Gqom Experience has earned its rightful place as one of Plett’s must-see calendar events. It is one of those events that should continue to be supported in all manner of ways as it not only puts Plett on the map but also pulls in huge economic benefits for the town.

Kudos to you Mr. Henge on a successful event; I know I am certainly looking forward to next year!
