Plett Ocean Underwater Workshop

partnered by The Lookout Deck

VENUE: Poortjies, Keurbooms Lagoon
DATE: Thursday 30 June, 10 am to 4pm

Entry is not open to the public. Spectators are welcome.

Plett Adopt-a-Swimmer partners with The Black Mermaid Foundation to bring the children of Bitou a brand new experience of the ocean.  Donning snorkels and masks for the very first time, the children will be introduced to the reef and underwater sea life under the guidance of children’s free dive instructor Zandile Ndhlovu. Louise Auersperg of Adopt a Swimmer is inspired by the collaboration which resonates with her belief that “once the sea has touched your soul, life on land will never be the same again.”

Life-Saving Gold Medallist Ellen Kleinsmidt will have a mini nipper flag workshop with the children on the beach.

Zandile Ndhlovu is a Freediving Instructor and the founder of The Black Mermaid Foundation, an organisation seeking to create diverse representation in the ocean arena. Her work centres around enabling access to ocean spaces to local ocean communities with the goal of bringing about inclusive participation in the use of ocean spaces recreationally, professionally and in sport, while creating a new generation of ocean guardians.

As a Diversity and Inclusion Consultant, she is able to make use of these skills in her advocacy while working to reshape narratives through storytelling. She has contributed to global topics that include ocean conservation, climate change, coastal justice and capacitating the youth to participate in the Blue Ocean Economy.

Zandile is an agent for change using her voice to create the needed expansion in society, through her work in the foundation, public speaking and on her social media platforms.

Adopt a Swimmer was officially registered as a non-profit in 2013. Spearheaded by the indefatigable Louise Auersperg who runs Plett Aquatics Swimming it became apparent to her year on year that nearly 80% of the youth in the Plett community cannot swim. The reason is largely due to the costs of swimming lessons. Adopt a Swimmer allows children of all backgrounds, under the guidance and coaching of Louise, the opportunity to develop this essential life skill.

The program relies on financial support, from companies and individuals, of a child through the process of acquiring this skill. The estimated time frame to teach a child to swim with confidence is 18-24 months. (there are exceptions)

It doesn’t stop there; if a child shows inclination and promise, Adopt a Swimmer mentors and sponsors them through to the next phase such as Micro Nippers, Nippers, live-saving, surfing, NSRI water-wise programs, Ocean Safari sea trips and breath-holding workshops held by world-renowned John McCarthy of Ocean Child.

In October last year Paul launched Spirit Photography, printing his photos on canvas so that you may now purchase them and take them home with you!

Displayed in the beautiful Sea Lounge of the Beacon Island Resort, every Friday morning, are just a few of the thousands of photos Paul has taken of the sun rising on Plett. You are welcome to pop into the BI and chat with Paul while you view his display, and please ask to see his growing catalogue of photos, too.

COST: R650 per person
BOOKING: or 082 322 2209

Rewilding … Back to Belonging is a journey of the senses, the heart and the creative mind in nature. It is facilitated by Julie Carlisle and Sue Swain.  Back to Belonging incorporates nature connection and immersion through the biomimicry lens, and opens senses to a deeper knowing of belonging in wilderness. The tool used to get “back to belonging” is the arts (painting, drawing, singing, writing, poetry, photography, etc), understanding that the process of creativity fosters an opening of heart and mind and stimulates heightened sensitivity to our surroundings. The journey is thus experienced through space with nature, intellectually and emotionally. It is manifested in words, songs, colour and dance.

Rewilding …. Back to Belonging invites you to remember your space, your place, your nature. It is a time to bear witness, through creation, of a place of comfort, to explore inner and outer worlds, remember our past and settle in “our now”.

Includes:  Facilitation, guiding, entrance and conservation fee, art materials (watercolour paints, pencils, notebooks, pens, paper, erasers).  Light snacks and water.

Bring:  Comfortable shoes (some walking involved),  sun hat, water bottle, snacks for lunch.
