Plett Tourism focus on the LGBTQ+ Travel Market
To help local businesses, as well as our own community, it is vital that we understand the dynamics of the LGBTQ+ travel sector and its role in the greater tourism economy. Plett Tourism is excited to share a milestone project from IGLTA (International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association, developed in collaboration with International Experience Canada (IEC).
Building Cultural Immersion, Connections, and Confidence for LGBTQ+ Travellers aged 18-35
This groundbreaking initiative, first unveiled at the IGLTA Global Convention in Osaka, Japan, highlights the transformative impact of travel and work experiences for young LGBTQ+ adults. It offers invaluable insights, practical recommendations, and inspiring stories that underscore the importance of fostering inclusion, cultural immersion, and professional confidence.
By collaborating with IEC, IGLTA has tapped into decades of expertise contributing to life-changing travel opportunities. We encourage you to explore the full report, available for viewing in the link below.
What is LGBTQ+ travel?
Firstly, let’s discuss who these travellers are. LGBTQ+ can be viewed as an umbrella term for this community, referring to sexual orientation, and individuals who have expressed a gender that may be different to what they were assigned at birth. But as an umbrella term referring to a very diverse group of people, it is important to note the intersectionality of the LGBTQ+ community. Nationality, race, age, or socio-economic factors are just a few points that differentiate us, and the same goes for those within the LGBTQ+ community.
Why should LGBTQ+ travel be a point of focus?
In South Africa, the LGBTQ+ market value (or ‘Pink Rand’, if you will), is estimated at a whopping 152 billion rand+. This niche market alone makes up 3.8% of our national GDP.
When you think of the usual types of travellers that make their way to Plett – the lifestyle is an obvious attraction. The Plett Tourism Association’s ‘Feel the love’ LGBTQ+ travel campaign is focused on growing the travel industry in Plett and along the Garden Route.
