With wildlife and a view to make anyone green with envy, it is no wonder that visitors plan their entire vacation schedule around a single round of golf at some of the finest fairways set in breathtaking locations around the Garden Route. The differences in scenery, geography and style ensure that you can play for days without being bored.
Neighbouring the golf estates you will find 16 wine farms and estates to tickle your taste buds whilst dining or visiting various wine growers’ tasting rooms, during your stay. The Plett Winelands are producing award winning wines and Méthode Cap Classique sparkling wines. This is one of South Africa’s newest wine of origin regions and they are producing a variety of cultivars, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Rose, along with the expanding Méthode Cap Classique varieties.
Peter Thorpe, a pioneering wine maker, discovered a piece of land with characteristic gentle slopes and cool sea breezes in The Crags area 14 years ago. Shortly thereafter he planted the first vines, believing the tepid climate and the soil conditions were excellent for vine growth. The first vines, Sauvignon Blanc, were planted in 2000 and over the years Plett has seen a growth of 16 new vineyards in the region. 200 000 bottles are produced annually, with the Sauvignon Blanc being considered equal to the one that is produced on the Malborough estates in New Zealand, not only for its climatic and geographic characteristics, but for the style of new aged wines which are changing perceptions of wine and bubbly, making local indeed ‘lekker’.
Set in the valleys and hills from Harkerville in the west to the Crags in the east, the vineyards are framed by the Indian Ocean on the south side and the Tsitsikamma Mountains to the north – an extraordinary natural amphitheatre which will come alive with the launch of the Plett Winelands Trails in May 2015.
