Rare Pygmy Right Whale Spotted Off Robberg
A Rare Ocean Surprise, shared with us by Plett Shark Spotters!
Recently, Plett had an unexpected visitor! Our bay is full of wonders and unforgettable encounters!
Renowned South African marine mammal scientists believe the animal possibly matches the description of a Pygmy Right Whale and are blown away by the rarity of such a sighting in our waters. Only a handful have ever been recorded in Plett!
These incredible animals can easily be misidentified as sharks due to their torpedo-shaped bodies, small triangular pectoral fins, and long breath holds – so it’s no wonder this one had the spotters fooled at first!
If you spotted this whale or captured any footage, please share it with us — sightings like this are incredibly valuable for research and conservation.
Just another reminder that in Plett, the extraordinary is always possible. Join us at Plett Ocean Festival 4 – 13 July 2025 and come curious!
