Barrington’s is home to the first craft brewery situated within the town of Plettenberg Bay itself, as well as a magnificent kitchen garden, brasserie, bar and small hotel.
Barrington’s light filled Brasserie is as serene as its surroundings, perfectly complementing the panoramic views of the valley beyond.
Enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner either inside or on the wraparound deck overlooking the garden and riverbank. The interior is a tailored mix of natural finishes, muted greens, marble tops and handcrafted wooden furniture. Lit by fireplaces and clusters of oversized rattan pendants, the Brasserie provides an elegant and tranquil space that works regardless of the time of day.
It’s the menus which offer unconventional delights. Slow cooked, pulled free range meats prepared in Barrington’s custom-made smoker paired with fresh indigenous regional ingredients, including Barrington’s very own daily harvest, offer a uniquely South African take on smokehouse cuisine. Finishing touches include freshly baked breads from the onsite bakery and a wide selection of homemade pickles, preserves and chutneys.

A show stopping triple volume reception leads into Plettenberg Bay’s first craft brewery which takes pride of place alongside the imposing 6 metre marble topped Barrington’s Bar.
Brass, leather, sheepskin and wood finishes combine to create a warm and subtly sophisticated ambience inside, with yet another fireplace to cosy up to come winter. All of which is brilliantly contrasted as you step through the enormous metal framed stacking doors into the more relaxed atmosphere of the wraparound deck overlooking the Boule court and garden. Inside or out, be prepared to linger longer.
Master Brewer, Marcus Meunier, heads up the onsite brewery and has crafted four superbly individual beers to start – a Lager, a Weiss, an English Ale and an American Rye Pale Ale. In addition to the Barrington beers on tap, the bar also stocks a wide selection of local and international craft spirits, single malt whiskeys, select South African wines and limited cocktail selection. Enjoy with a delicious selection of Tapas available from 12:00 – 22:00.
Barrington’s Small Hotel
Opening January 2020
Barrington’s Small Hotel, situated directly above the brewery, provides an undeniably unique yet central location a stone’s throw from the beach and Plettenberg Bay’s world class, championship golf course.
A quiet industrial aesthetic, carried through from downstairs, gives way to ten elegantly simple white on white rooms. Luxurious linens, feature lighting and locally produced organic amenities in the en-suite bathrooms, ensure an indulgent stay.
Four of the more spacious rooms have private balconies, some of which appear to perch in the canopy of Barrington’s treasured coral tree.
Quite “the perfect place” for travellers wanting more than a bed for the night.
Barrington’s Kitchen Garden
At the forefront of Barrington’s ethos is its absolute commitment to sustainability. Nowhere is this more evident than in its magnificent 1000m (squared) white walled, organic kitchen garden that one journeys through on the way in.
The garden’s provision of daily fresh harvests to the kitchen limits Barrington’s carbon footprint and the plague of excess packaging of having it brought in. Surplus produce will either be pickled or preserved to be used within the restaurant or sold directly to the public.
Barrington’s is the first craft brewery to be situated within the town of Plettenberg Bay itself. The 500 lt brewery is headed up by Knysna local, Marcus Meunier who has crafted four superbly individual beers to start – a Lager, a Weiss, an English Ale and an American Rye Ale.
Barrington Lager – Crisp and refreshing with a slightly bitter finish. Undeniably moreish.
Barrington Rye Pale Ale – Infused with malted rye offering a smooth palate and unique hint of spice. The combination of American and South African hops offer citrus aromas and fresh fruity flavours.
Barrington Weiss – A refreshing and thirst quenching German Style Ale using malted wheat (responsible for the cloudy appearance) and malted barley. The aromas and flavours of spicy clove, banana and a hint of bubblegum are derived from the unique German yeast.
Barrington English Ale – Malty flavours with hints of biscuit and a dry finish. The use of English barley and hops give the Barrington’s ale a uniquely earthy character.
In addition to these founding four Barrington beers, seasonal beers will also be brewed and on offer throughout the year.
Enjoy a taster of each and determine your favourite in the beautiful Barrington’s bar which is open from midday until late. A generous selection of Tapas, which perfectly complement the beers, are also available to order from 12:00 – 22:00 daily.
The Barrington ethos is firmly grounded by its absolute commitment to sustainability and the protection of its environment, which includes the ongoing care and rehabilitation of the Klein Piesang Riverbank.
The removal of all alien vegetation from the property and subsequent mass planting of indigenous trees and shrubs has already made a significant impact to the quality of water and birdlife along this section of the river.
Aside from the organic kitchen garden, other notable features include a 120 000 lt underground grey water reservoir to be used for irrigation purposes, gas geysers throughout and the future installation of 180 solar panels. Support for locally farmed, ethically produced meat and produce from within a 30km radius and Barrington’s very own daily harvest will further assist in limiting the operations carbon footprint throughout.
Most exciting is that plans are already underway for Barrington’s to spearhead the development of a community kitchen garden and provide ongoing training and support to one of Plettenberg Bay’s most disadvantaged communities.
