The Adventure Racing World Series will take on the Garden Route in 2016. The Adventure Racing World Series consists of 9 events worldwide and each year one of these events is chosen for the world championship. The circuit has been around since 2001 and the Southern African edition “Expedition Africa“ joined in 2012. This year Expedition Africa will be held on the Garden Route.
The Plett Adventure Racing Team consists of four local adventure extremists who will be flying the “Plett it’s a feeling” flag for Plettenberg Bay when they take part in this gruelling event from 15 to 21 May 2016. Expedition Africa will see them bike, run and paddle, navigating their own way from check point to check point on an unmarked route, from Sedgefield, through Knysna and then to Plettenberg Bay, traversing various mountains, valleys and rivers along the way – over 520 km of non-stop racing.
The team members are:
Andrew Damp
Crags resident and family man, Andrew Damp has already lived an adrenalin-filled life including white-water rafting guide on the Tugela and Zambezi Rivers, anti-poaching in Kwa-Zulu Natal and managing the world-famous Bloukrans Bungy.
Andrew’s work in timber construction and community service as fire protection warden and mountain rescuer led to exploring the playground of Plettenberg Bay through paragliding, long distance running, mountain biking and paddling and into the sport of adventure racing.
Petrus Maree
This will be the first Expedition Africa event for designer Petrus Maree. Living in Plett since 2007, Petrus enjoys short to ultra trail runs in addition to paddling, hiking, nature sports and mountain biking.
His comment on Expedition Africa Garden Route: “It’s a long way but privileged to race and explore this beautiful area!”
Kate Southey
Originally from Wilderness, Kate Southey is the team’s youngest member and a high school geography teacher.
Kate is enjoying her anticipation for what will be her first Expedition Africa challenge, is an avid hiker, mountain biker and canoer whose favourite Plett training ground is Keurbooms River!
Drew Scott
Team navigator, Drew Scott, is a keen mountaineer who has climbed many African peaks including Mount Kenya, Towerkop, Cockscomb and Formosa. A nurseryman and landscaper by profession, Drew heads up the Mountain Search and Rescue unit for the Garden Route area and is a part of the local fire protection service and Crags neighborhood watch.
Drew rounds up his adventure resume as an experienced Cathsseta Registered Adventure guide, River rafting Guide, Yachtmaster offshore skipper, paddler, mountain biker and trail runner.
