Soweto Derby revives locals’ love for soccer

Saturday the 29th of July saw the clashing of two South African soccer giants- Orlando Pirates vs. Kaizer Chiefs, to what we have come to know as the “Soweto Derby”. It’s an event that is never missed by soccer loving South Africans across the country. And locals in Kwano were part of that soccer fever when Schoolboys Jazz Café closed the main street in Kwano for few hours while watching this clash of the titans.
Schoolboys Jazz Café, affectionately known as “Skhuluz Lounge” by patrons such as myself, is Kwano and most likely Plett’s oldest active Jazz Café, founded in 1990 in Bossiesgif before we moved to Kwano in ’96, nicely situated in Kwano’s main street (Sishuba Street) just metres away from the CBD, and has enough parking field in-between the day clinic and day care centre, at the back of Simunye Community Centre.
The event was called the “18th Area Street Carnival”, hours before kick-off, the closed section of the street in front of Skhuluz Lounge was abuzz with locals playing street soccer, local young entrepreneurs also took the opportunity to showcase and market their brands and products, and such brands included among others a street wear lifestyle brand called- Bashman. Street vendors also seized the moment to sell their regular streetwise meals and snacks, all in all it was an appetizing affair.

Skhuluz Lounge was packed beyond capacity that afternoon and people continued to flock in throughout the night. The music was jazz to deep house and with a fusion of R&B there and there, with their deemed bluish interior lights, the vibe created the mood for a smooth night. Even though my side lost 1-0 to Kaizer chiefs that afternoon, it didn’t seem to bother us Pirates supporters, for we know we were in good hands, at least for as long as we were not sober.
The event was organised by Schoolboys Jazz Café in partnership with Bashman Street Wear and Plett Tourism. Whether there is an event or no event, care to pop in at Skhuluz Lounge for a chilled night out and enjoy some good music and meet interesting people.
