The start of the fourth day of Expedition Africa dawned as the Plett Adventure Racing Team made their way along the coast from Gamtoos River Mouth into Jeffrey’s Bay to their penultimate transition of the adventure race, Expedition Africa 2017 – Baviaans.
The past few days have seen these incredible athletes trek 140km, cycle 200km and paddle 40km across the Eastern Cape, crossing rivers, peddling dirt roads and hiking through the Cape Buffalo region of the Baviaanskloof. In an exciting turn for the team, competing in only their second Expedition Africa, the Plett Adventure Racing Team are solidly in the top ten teams of this race, along with teams from South Africa, Sweden, Japan, Australia and France. The team has been racing for over 72 hours, with only a couple of hours sleep each day.
When we caught up with the Plett Adventure Racing Team in the Gamtoos Valley, team navigator Drew Scott said: “We’re really happy. We were pushing to get through the dark zone, which was really a make-or-break.” After a short nap in Jeffrey’s Bay, the team has embarked on another mammoth cycle of 123km through the farmlands and mountains, before completing a final trek back to the start of Expedition Africa, Cape St Francis.
Plett Tourism is proud to sponsor our Plett Adventure icons as a symbol of the adventurous nature of our beautiful town and wish them the best of luck for the rest of Expedition Africa. We will be following them live on www.expafrica.live (team 24). Follow the team’s highs and lows during Expedition Africa on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
