Heritage Day was celebrated with huge enthusiasm by residents of Plett and the outlying areas of Bitou in a gathering at the town’s show grounds on a beautiful sunny 24th of September.

With music by the local marching band, the festivities were opened at 12pm, followed by an address from Bitou Executive Mayor Memory Booysen. Western Cape Minister of Transport and Public Works, Donald Grant, also took to the stage to address the crowd, with a message to all citizens that they should undertake to embrace each other’s cultures and traditions.

The national anthem was sung by the entire crowd in a moving tribute to a country of diverse cultures whose people can come together to celebrate their traditions and heritage.

Following the formalities, the Riel Dancers took advantage of the hot, dry conditions to kick up a cloud of dust. Traditionally dressed women and girls were awarded prizes for their participation, with the crowd chanting for their favourites.

The event included a braai competition, beer tent and many food stalls that displayed the vast range of different tastes and flavours on offer in our rainbow nation.
