OFTEN dubbed the playground of the rich and famous, Plettenberg Bay and Knysna can now officially claim the title. This year’s wealth report shows South Africa’s super rich find the two coastal towns the most popular to live in.

Not only do Plett and Knysna top the list of most popular second- or holiday-home destinations among multimillionaires, they also feature among the top 10 most popular towns or suburbs in South Africa for the affluent to put down roots. Some of the rich include Dimension Data founder Jeremy Ord, former FirstRand chief executive Paul Harris, former Springbok rugby coach Nick Mallet and golfer Gary Player.

The report, compiled by New World Wealth, which provides information on the global wealth sector with a special focus on Africa and the Middle East, was released last week. It showed 490 multimillionaires have second homes in Plettenberg Bay and Knysna, almost double the number of their closest rivals. Umhlanga and La Lucia in KwaZulu-Natal took the second spot with 250 homes and Camps Bay in the Western Cape was third with 220 properties. Another Western Cape town, Hermanus, made the top 10 with 30 homes.
