Plettenberg Bay offers a delightful tapestry of local markets, each with its own charm and attractions. More than a shopping experience, they’re social hubs for the community and visitors alike to enjoy a laid-back atmosphere and welcoming open-air venues.
Popular as a day- and night-time market is Market Off Main; a bustling marketplace located on Sewell Street – as the name suggests – just off Main Street. With lovely views across the bay to the Tsitsikamma mountains, Market Off Main embodies an abundant and enticing food market philosophy. Beyond the delectable food, browse through stalls selling leather goods, antiques, second-hand clothing, jewellery, African art, gifts, and books. And there’s live music in the evenings, making it a perfect spot for a relaxed sundowner.

For a true Garden Route experience, the Harkerville Saturday Market is a must-visit. Situated on the N2 between Plett and Knysna, this rustic market is a fusion of a farmers’ and craft markets. Every Saturday morning, visitors can enjoy their famous breakfast under a mighty oak tree after browsing stalls packed with organic vegetables, fresh breads, locally produced cheeses, home-cooked meals, and various arts and crafts.

There’s a little bit of Plett magic and mystery at the iconic Global Village on Piesang Valley Road. For more than 25 years, this eclectic market has been a gem waiting to be discovered by each visitor in turn. Global Village is excellent for gift shopping with a wonderful array of jewellery, home decor, clothing, local artisanal crafts, incense, bags, curios, kiddies’ toys and more. Sip a coffee in the sun while the children enjoy the outdoor playground.

Another gem with an interesting history is Old Nick Village, a landmark shopping destination housed in a rambling 19th-century Cape farm complex. Old Nick Village is home to creative manufacturers, designers, and curators, offering a treasured shopping experience with art galleries, artisanal crafts, and the exquisite Mungo Mill where you can witness textiles being woven. Every Wednesday, Old Nick hosts its Midweek Market, showcasing homegrown fruit and vegetables, ethically farmed meat and dairy, and a variety of local, natural, and homemade products.
