This year Plett’s annual Street Lights Festival coincided with the funeral of our beloved Madiba. Usually a celebration of the beginning of the summer season and the switching on of our festival lights, this year’s event took a different approach.

The Plett community and visitors gathered in the Main Street, which had been decked out with a stage and banners of Madiba, to watch talented local performers and to the celebrate the life of our former president. Musicians and dancers took to the stage to initiate the celebration and the festival created a culturally infused atmosphere where music and dance ruled the day, while the high-spirited crowds still took time out to write in a book to commemorate Nelson Mandela.
