The Plettenberg Honours 29 Staff Members for Long Service, including 35-Year Service Veteran Martha Ganga

The Plettenberg Hotel recently hosted a heartfelt celebration to honour 29 dedicated team members whose combined service spans an impressive 250 years within the hotel. Among them was Martha Ganga, the hotel’s longest-serving employee, who marked 35 years of loyal service since joining on 20 September 1989, only a year after the hotel first opened.

Born and raised in The Crags, Martha began her career at The Plettenberg as an 18-year old waiter. Her talent, determination, and warm spirit quickly saw her rise through the ranks when she was promoted from restaurant supervisor and manager to Food & Beverage Coordinator. For the past 12 years, she has flourished as Duty Manager, a role that perfectly complements her vibrant personality and commitment to hospitality.

The loyalty and dedication of staff members like Martha is the foundation of the guest experience that have made the hotel a beloved ‘barefoot-luxury’ destination for decades. ‘If you’ve ever stayed at The Plettenberg, you’ve likely been greeted by Martha’s signature smile and heartfelt ‘hello’,’ says General Manager Ainsley Williams. ‘Many of our guests return year after year because of Martha. She remembers their names, their stories, and always makes them feel at home. She truly embodies the spirit of South African hospitality that we are so proud of, and which consistently ranks us amongst the top hotels on the continent and in the world.’

Martha herself says it’s always been about the people. ‘I love being around our guests –  talking, laughing, welcoming them back. I can’t sit still at a desk!’ she laughs. She fondly recalls her early days, including the challenge of communicating with international guests using a makeshift sign language. Today, she welcomes back some of those guests’ children, now adults themselves, continuing the cycle of warm and personal connection at The Plettenberg.

A significant influence and mentor in Martha’s journey, was the late Mrs Liz McGrath, founder of The Liz McGrath Collection, who Martha describes was like a second mother to her. Recognising her potential early on, Mrs McGrath arranged for Martha to gain international 5-star experience in Bath, England – an opportunity that helped shape her hospitality career.

When asked what has kept her at The Plettenberg for over three decades, Martha’s answer is simple: ‘I’m happy. I love people, I love hearing their stories and learning about their lives. For me, our guests really do become family.’
