The Van Plettenberg Historical Society has embarked on an ambitious project to affix explanatory plaques to buildings of historical importance in Plettenberg Bay to improve recognition and enhance interest in them.

The Wittedrift High, Murray High and Plett Secondary History classes have volunteered to collect early drawings and photographs of these buildings as part of their History curriculum for the year. It is hoped that residents,  and even visitors, will engage with them to ensure a successful and comprehensive project.

The chairman of the Van Plettenberg Historical Society, Mr Peter Tullis, has appealed to residents and persons who have historical links with Plett to participate in this project. “All you need do is email a drawing or early photograph of the item/structure in question at the time it was built to rowe.greenvalley@telkomsa.net. Include also a short description of the item detailing when it was built/erected, for whom, the purpose for which it was built, where it is situated and to what use it has been put subsequently.”

The material collected will be carefully scrutinised to ensure accuracy and then transferred to a plaque being designed by the art students of Bay College who will also design a route leaflet to be made available to visitors and residents and to be accessible  on the historical society’s web page pletthistory.org.

The Van Plettenberg Historical Society is a non-profit organisation which relies entirely on members subscriptions and donations. It meets six times a year and attracts international and local leaders in their fields to speak on subjects of historical interest. Readers interested in joining the society or who would simply like to make a donation towards the successful completion of this ambitious project should contact Sean O’Connell on 044 533 0598.
