A Vision for Plett: Mayor Jessica Kamkam’s Journey and Commitment to Community

In light of Women’s Month this August and Tourism Month this September, we spoke to Bitou Executive Mayor Jessica Kamkam, a leader whose journey from the small town of The Crags to the forefront of local politics is defined by her deep roots and unwavering commitment to her community.

Her story is a powerful testament to the impact of local knowledge, curiosity, collaboration and a vision for inclusive growth.

From The Crags to Community-Driven Tourism

Born and raised in The Crags, a small town just outside Plettenberg Bay and nestled against the towering Tsitsikamma Mountains, she grew up surrounded by the vibrant natural beauty of the region and her appreciation for the biodiversity of the area began from a young age. Kamkam’s tourism journey formally started in 2002 when she joined the Women on the Move project, a community initiative where she worked as a fabric painter, selling cushions, tablecloths, murals and beadwork to tourists. This experience, along with a later stint on the board of Plett Tourism, solidified her belief in tourism’s potential as a powerful economic driver for the town. She firmly believes that all communities should be involved—their input is crucial, and they deserve to share in the opportunities tourism creates.

Advice for the Next Generation of Women Leaders

When we asked for her advice for young women looking to get into tourism or politics, Mayor Jessica Kamkam emphasized two things: self-belief and a constant willingness to learn. “Believe in the value of your voice and your skills,” she shared. She says both fields require passion, persistence, and strong people skills. Her key message is simple: be willing to learn, network, and to “take up space in rooms where decisions are made.” She also encourages seeking out mentors and staying curious, noting that she believes local knowledge and community connections are a person’s greatest strengths.

Current Projects Focused on Sustainable Growth

Kamkam’s continued commitment to her community is evident in her current initiatives. She actively supports projects aimed at creating sustainable livelihoods, such as the Kurland soap-making project and a local beekeeping project. She is also working closely with conservation organizations like Nature’s Valley Trust and SANPARKS on inclusive conservation projects that protect the environment while creating opportunities for the tourism industry. Sharing her insights, she explains: “I believe the tourism sector can play a vital role in supporting these and many other initiatives in our previously disadvantaged communities, helping to create inclusive growth”.

Plett Tourism would like to thank Mayor Kamkam for her insights and her support, and shares her vision of #OnePlett as we continue to work with Bitou Municipality on community-driven projects through the Plett ARTS Festival, Plett Ocean Festival, entrepreneurial resources and the Local Economic Development Office, amongst others.
