An Orca whale, also known as a “Killer Whale” was spotted around lunch time yesterday (9 December) in Plett cruising a couple of hundred metres behind the back wave line close to the Beacon Isle Resort and Central Beach.
Plett occasionally enjoys sightings of Orca whales, the area was visited earlier this year in January by a pod of six. The sighting off Plett is a remarkable experience. A representative from Offshore Adventures captured images of the orca whale when she witnessed its movements in the bay.
Orca whales don’t usually travel on their own, they are usually in pods. It is very likely that this single orca could be chasing food.
The killer whale (Orcinus orca), also referred to as the orca whale, and is a toothed whale. They are generally found in all oceans. Killer whales have a diverse diet, some feed exclusively on fish, while others hunt marine mammals including seal, dolphin and even other species of whales.
They are highly social and are well known for their sophisticated hunting techniques and unique vocal behaviours.
