Platinum For Plett! Newstead Wines Secures Rare Top Honour At Michelangelo Awards 2025
Plettenberg Bay is celebrating a historic win as Newstead’s Methode Cap Classique (MCC) Rosé 2018 was awarded a rare Platinum and an exceptional 96 points at the prestigious Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards 2025. This triumph places the boutique 11-hectare vineyard firmly among the country’s elite, with their MCC Rosé being one of only 24 entries out of more than 1,330 to achieve this highly coveted status.
Since planting their first vines in 2008, Newstead has quickly established itself as a beacon of excellence in the emerging Plett Wine Route, defying its status as the “best kept secret” in the South African wine industry to earn international acclaim. The 2018 vintage MCC Rosé, praised for its luminant, elegant, and silky character with delicious raspberry flavours and hints of red berries, proves that Plett’s cool-climate terroir is perfectly suited for producing world-class sparkling wine.
This top accolade follows a string of recent successes that firmly cement Newstead’s place at the pinnacle of Cap Classique production. Already crowned the Best Cap Classique Producer of 2024 at the Amorim Cap Classique Challenge, the estate continues its winning streak this year, also collecting a Gold for their Newstead Cap Classique Blanc de Blanc 2018 in the same competition. Their consistent quality is evident in past wins like the Trophy for the Newstead Méthode Cap Classique 2017 Blanc de Blanc, demonstrating that the Plett Wine Route – while small – is a force to be reckoned with.
