Any sign of movement between the obscure reference beacons upon the slopes of Feather Bed Nature Reserve on the Knysna Lagoon becomes a mutual focus point. The increasingly weary welcoming party aboard Sailing Yacht LaraBella squint into the darkness with the equivalent excitement of a child spotting the first glimpse of the ocean on route to a December holiday. It is now well past midnight. A familiar Leopard 40 masthead light floating in the abyss would be the tell-tale to that which we have been anticipating for several weeks.
Sailing Yacht Bella Luna has arrived on the Southern Coast of Africa after more than a decade in the tropical paradise known as Seychelles. With skipper Simon van Deventer at the helm, she braved the infamous Knysna Heads at approximately 00:20 on Saturday 5th October. The significance of this for the team at Ocean Sailing Charters is immense as it represents the final step in the voyage toward the opportunity to return home ourselves, once again, to Plettenberg Bay. These waters and beaches are what we hold most dear along with the passion to share the wonder of what we are so very fortunate to call our home.
It has been an incredible journey of adventure over the past few weeks. Having departed from Eden Island on Mahe, Seychelles, on 28th September, skipper Neil van Deventer and crew braved the heavy swell south to Mayotte, north of Madagascar, where they would make the crossing to the northern coast of Mozambique and down to Richard’s Bay on the KZN North Coast.
Adverse weather conditions saw a crew swap, once cleared through the KwaZulu-Natal coastline, with Neil handing over to his dad Simon for the home run. With another week navigating the eastern and southern coastline of Africa, Bella Luna is finally where she belongs and is being prepared to do what she does best…sail the seas. Ocean Sailing Charters are so looking forward to sharing this unparalleled experience with the residents and visitors of Plettenberg Bay in the months to come.
